For Procter & Gamble, selling baby care products is only of second interest. What the company has to offer first, through its worldwide string of Pampers websites, is extensive baby care knowledge, ready to help young parents.
Mothers can sign up and receive free newsletters regarding the evolution of their pregnancy, get access to a personalized birth calendar or can even see the world through their baby's eyes, thanks to various Flash movies or games.
The challenge
The stake was high for CamelWeb Creations. In time, due to the original Java encoding, the Pampers websites have become a giant with clay legs. To satisfy an increasing number of articles and functionalities, more and more code lines had to be added, an approach which made system architecture much too branchy.
The Pampers websites had lost their original flexibility, presenting high loading times for impatient parents, a situation carefully analyzed by Atos Origin. The reputable IT service provider offered an integrative insight, together with a definite global solution, put into practice by our resources. The new websites were to be called "Pampers LITE", as a promise for flexibility and ease of operation.
How we developed a strategy with our partner.
We started with Pampers Lite UK, which became a template for our "campaign" of locales. As previously agreed with Atos Origin, we went for a PHP 4 developing platform, allowing users an optimized experience of the dynamic information presented on the websites. Content has been structured and organized, and because such websites required a data base, the PHP coding was connected with a MySQL database. This is a fast and reliable open source database in which we have gathered all the members signing up for newsletters, texts, frequently asked questions or games, clearly structured and saved into tables.
The next big challenge was to determine a database strategy to be used for all the locales waiting to be developed. Together with Atos Origin, we agreed upon having separated databases for each country locale, and not one database with one table per section for all locales, or even one database with one table for each section of the locales. Trust us, this makes sense!
.and made it work
The approach we have chosen had the most advantages to offer: use of different encoding for each locale if such thing was needed, ease of database back up, a minimum risk of "losing all data", the possibility to develop and implement additions according to each locale's requirements, a clear overview and, very important, ease of separating locales in terms of hosting.
However, if a global addition must be implemented, we have to change the structure for all locales, a situation yet to be handled by our numerous resources.
Our development team enabled the UK website to receive later additions and extensions, this time structured upon a clear logic, with the help of the SMARTY technique, commonly known as a "template engine".
An ongoing evolution
16 Pampers locales have been developed up till now, following these steps and 2 other are presently under construction.
CamelWeb Creations handles the ongoing maintenance of the Pampers LITE websites on a daily basis, and allocates separate resources for monitoring change requests and the possible errors appearing in such a vast system.
We are proud to mention that our reaction times were even beating deadlines when not so many locales had yet been developed.
